Abstract: While preparing his direction for the 1975 Warten auf Godot production at Schiller-Theater, Beckett pinpointed his directorial goal: "Der Konfusion eine Gestalt." The term ‘Gestalt’ holds significance in Beckett’s artistic practice especially in his engagement with ambiguity as a central aesthetic mode. As this talk will demonstrate, Beckett’s understanding of Gestalt psychology – in relation to sense perception in general and visual perception in particular – plays a profound role in shaping his own artistic practice. By examining Beckett’s own direction of his television play Geistertrioin 1977, this talk will explore Beckett’s utilisation of Gestalt concepts to challenge our ways of seeing and problematise our viewing experience.
